YOGAspirit®: Advanced Yoga Teacher Certification Program (500 Hour Certification)

The Core Studies of YOGAspirit®
Studios 500-hour certification is offered in a 5-day retreat format.

Our goal in this training is to give you more tools for your toolkit so that you can address the changing needs of your students and also to expand your understanding of yoga therapeutics.

YOGAspirit® Studios 500-hour certification is a natural progression from our 200-hour program. The supportive environment offers the professional teacher the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and peer-support. This program trains the teacher to use yoga therapeutics, posture assessment, meditation and contemplation techniques to deepen their own practice and enable them to guide their clients and students.

This program influences the person you are, progresses your yoga practice and enhances your teaching abilities by deepening your spirituality.

Integrating YOGAspirit® Mind-Body Therapeutic Techniques and YOGAspirit® Subtle Body Energy Healing you begin to facilitate change in your clients and students.

YOGAspirit® Studios 500-hour Curriculum:

  • Advancing your Sadhana through asana, pranayama, meditation & contemplation

Pre-Requisites:
The 500-hour program is open to students who have received a 200 hour certification from any Yoga Alliance registered school. If you are not yet certified or would like to attend a module for non certification, Modules #2, #3, #5 & #6 are open to all. If you are not an alumni or current student of YOGAspirit®, an application must be reviewed by the director and a brief interview scheduled prior to admittance into the program/module.

Please Note:

It is recommended that students should register at least 4 weeks in advance for their preferred Module to guarantee that they will have enough time to complete Module Study Packets and Guides. To ensure this, a $100.00 non-refundable deposit is due to hold your place within Module and will be applied towards the full tuition cost. Once registered you will receive your packet in the mail and will have it completed to bring with you during the Module along with any other required books or materials (may vary according to module content.)

Refund Policy:
All Refunds and/or credits will be issued in US Dollars only. Included in the registration fee is a non-refundable $100 deposit. The $100 deposit, while non-refundable, can be used toward any future YOGAspirit® workshop.

Cancellation Policy:
All Classes are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met. Please call to confirm prior to making travel arrangements.

Attendance Policy:
Full attendance is required to receive credit.



Course Format for 500-hour:
To receive 500-hour certification from YOGAspirit® Studios, students must attend the core study modules #1-6, five-day intensives at retreat centers throughout New England. Modules may be taken in any order with one exception, students must attend Module #1 first in order to attend Module #4.



500-Hour Module #1: Asana: Intermediate/advanced Bio mechanics, Assists & Language w/ Kim Valeri

Two Weekends 6/13/08 - 6/15/08 and 7/25/08 - 7/27/08

Offered in a weekend format; Friday 6-9 pm; Saturday 8:30 - 10am & 11:30 am - 6pm; Sunday 10am - 12pm & 1:30-6:30pm in Connecticut. The 40 hour module will take place in two weekends 6/13 - 15th, 2008 and again 7/25 - 27th, 2008 PLUS Homestudy non-contact hour requirement ($300 per weekend plus a one-time materials fee)

In this week we will explore YOGAspirit® Studios' Advanced Asana list in order to work with the visible changes in the seasoned practitioner. As our students advance, we have the opportunity to use subtler language cues (e.g. bandhas and energy lines) in order for their practice to penetrate the deeper layers of their being.

By the end of this Module:

•  Participants will be able to identify nine attributes that distinguish the advanced beginner from the seasoned practitioner.

•  Participants will be acquainted with verbal cues appropriate for the seasoned practitioner.

•  Participants will experience giving subtler verbal cues in a class setting.

•  Participants will practice five asana sequences to be later used in personal practice and class settings




500 Hour- Module #2: Tantra Yoga: Living the Yogic Life (Philosphy intensive) w/ Kim Valeri

Two Weekends 5/23/08 - 5/25/08 and 8/08/08 - 8/10/08

Offered in a weekend format; Fri 6-9 pm; Sat 8:00 - 10:00am, 11:30am - 6:00pm; and Sunday 10am - 12pm and 1:30pm - 6:30pm in Connecticut. The 40 hour module will take place of two weekends 5/23 - 25th, 2008 and again 8/8 - 10th, 2008 PLUS Homestudy non-contact hour requirement ($300 per weekend plus a $35 materials fee)

This course expands upon the teachings from YOGAspirit® Studios' Sacred Life philosophy course. Studying yogic scriptures, such as The Hatha Yoga Pradapika and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, we will focus on bringing the yogic teachings into daily life as a way to spiritualize one's relationships and lifestyle and to bring about a sense of purposeful living. Part of our study will also be on the physiological and spiritual changes of the Samyama process and understanding the 4 Aims of Life. Ayurvedic concepts will also be discussed.

By the end of this Module:

• Students will have more in-depth knowledge of the 3rd and 4th chapters of Yoga Sutras

• Studying from the Hatha Pradapika, students will understand the 10 mudras and the Active and Passive paths of practice.

• Students will become better established in their own personal meditation and contemplative personal practices.

• Receive CEU Certifications that can be applied toward the full 500 Hour certification program.

• Participants will be able to identify spiritual and physiological changes in the Samayama process

• Students will understand the role of a yogic life in service to each other and community.

• Students will be able to identify the four aims of life.

• Students will participate in personal transformational estacic dance and pranic healing circle group sessions.




500 Hour- Module #3: Yoga Therapy: Establishing a Private Client Practice w/ Kim Valeri

Creating a yoga therapy practice can be a rewarding endeavor for yoga teachers. In this course Kim Valeri will share her wealth of knowledge from her 12 years of private practice, working with individuals using yoga, meditation, self-guided inquiry, energetics and healing techniques. We will examine the holistic assessment and evaluation process, varied therapeutic applications and development of monitored home practice plans. Ayurvedic assessment tools will also be discussed. Case studies will be used to discuss documentation, consultations and working with clients who have complex histories.

By the end of this Module:

•  Participants will be able to conduct a holistic assessment.

•  Participants will become aware of the relationship between mind/body with quantum physics.

•  Participants will be familiar with appropriate documentation needed when working with private clients.

•  Participants will be able to identify when and where to apply Mind Body Therapeutic Techniques.

•  Participants will know when when and how to apply subtle body energy healing.

•  Participants will be aware of marketing, financial and business guidelines.

•  Participant will learn guidelines of establishing a healthy emotional, physical relationship with your students using active listening and self guided inquiry techniques.



Module #4: Advanced Practicum: Advancing the skill level of your students w/ Kim Valeri
Next Start Date: April 6, 2008 - Practicum Day Intensive (500-hour poses). Pick one of the following Experiential Anatomy (EAYP) 10-hour workshops to attend: January 19-20, 2008, or more dates TBA. See Module #1 dates. You will begin with a practicum day intensive with Kim (we will be teaching the 500 Hour poses with each other) you will be assigned specific poses to TEACH at the Mod. 1 training to the participants learning them for the first time. You will also be assiged to a specific student so that I can supervise your knowledge of assisting directly during that Module. You will ONLY be required to participate for 14 of those 40 hours. There is some flexibility with those hours, however I will assign you the specific poses ahead of time and can tell you where and when they are scheduled during the Mod.1 weekends. PLUS Homestudy non-contact hour requirements are to be met.

Through group exercises, peer-sharing and hands-on teaching, teachers will get a chance to try their hand at teaching from YOGAspirit® Studios advanced asana syllabus. Using the 8-week practicum series designed by Kim Valeri, students will come away with creative sequencing tips and ways to assist and modify the student in a multi-level classroom. Pre-requisite Module #1.

By the end of this Module:

•  Participants will be able to design asana sequencing incorporating thirty-six poses for the intermediate / advanced yoga student.

•  Participants will be able to verbally and physically cue students in a multi-level class.

•  Participants will be familiar with the thirty-six advanced asanas.

•  Participants will demonstrate physical assists and modifications for thirty-six asanas.

•  Participants will deepen their own personal practice in asana, meditation, and pranayama.

•  Participants will learn sequencing on vinyasa flow and form structure classes.

•  Participants will receive an eight week practicum series for use.




Module #5: Spring Cleanse: Ayurveda & Yoga

Featuring segments designed specifically for non-teachers as well as for teachers, this program is an essential stopping point on your path to self-discovery. The retreat is also a required module for all 500-hour certification candidates.

The Ayurvedic health care system is the oldest form of established medicine in the world. But in its antiquity we find the most modern and time proven healing techniques and philosophies. This approach emphasizes prevention and presents a truly holistic approach to self-care and nurturing of mind, body and spirit. Ayurveda offers simple, proven techniques to rid our bodies of these ruthless attackers of the immune system The traditional “Pancha Karma” (5 cleansing treatments), is mostly practiced at the seasonal transitions to assist you to attain purification and rejuvenation of
your whole being.

Ayurvedic Spring Cleanse Outline

Phase One:
Elimination of specific foods respecting each individuals needs. Incorporates a juice fast, a cooking class to introduce participants to the programs menu, and a review of the cleansing program with Marie-Josée and other participants for discussion.

Phase Two: Oleation - Internal & external absorption of fats, bringing toxins from the tissues of the body to the digestive system through a mono diet, exercise and breath work.

Phase Three: Elimination of toxins utilizing fresh, organic foods.

Phase Four: Rebuilding strength and vitality by establishing appropriate diet (food, herbs & spices) based on an individuals constitution.

Phase Five: Establishing a rhythm for continued lifestyle changes.

Developing Your Voice as a Teacher
Your voice is your vehicle to bring your knowledge, feeling and understanding of yoga to your students. Explore how to continually developing your voice as a teacher can enrich and enliven your own practice as well as touch the lives of your students in a profound and healing way. Find your edge as you build your technical proficiency and let your asana practice unfold. All families of postures will be woven into this series of workshops, including standing poses, backbends, twists, inversions, balances, forward bends, and relaxation.

Inspiration for teachers: Participatory group discussion on what brings us to the source and how to communicate that to our students. Maintaining a fresh relationship to practice gives us confidence to teach from experience. The essence of the yoga sutra will reinforce this.

Hips, Legs and Pelvis as the gateway and roots of connection to earth energy: Pranayama as the gateway to breath, space and light. Restorative will also be included.

Sequencing and Formatting:
We will practice sequences that are compatible with the fasting program. The asana focus will be on twists (for detoxification, ) forward bends and backbends. We will include modifications and adjustments.

In this segment you will:
  • Receive CEU certificate towards full 500 Hour Yoga Therapy Certification Program
  • Learn hands-on assists and modifications when teaching in a multi-level class.
  • Learn strategies for bringing pranayama into your personal practice as well as your teaching.
  • Participate in group discussion about what inspires you as a teacher and how to use your personal inspiration in your classroom setting.
  • Participate in philosophy discussion on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali


2006 Module #6: Fall Rejuvenation: Ayurveda & Yoga: Leadership and Self-Mastery w/ Marie-Josee Carriere and Kim Valeri

The Ayurvedic health care system is the oldest form of established medicine in the world. But in its antiquity we find the most modern and time proven healing techniques and philosophies. This approach emphasizes prevention and presents a truly holistic approach to self-care and nurturing of mind, body and spirit. Ayurveda offers simple, proven techniques to rid our bodies of these ruthless attackers of the immune system. A Fall rejuvenation gives our bodies a chance to grow stronger and to build defenses against destructive agents.


Fall Rejuvenation Program Outline

A time of year to boost immunity in preparation for winter months, students who join the Fall Rejuvenation will:

• Learn how to build immunity and self care through Ayurvedic Techniques including, pulse taking and nutrition.

• Learn Rejuvenation therapies, herbology, cold flu prevention, have a discussion of dietary guidelines and assessing their own health is also included.

• Students will learn personal pulse taking and document their own pulse including their prakruti. They will review personal constitution and speak intelligently about their goals of Ayurveda.

• Students will be able to confer with Ayurvedic practitioners in order to serve their students/ clients through diagnostic assessment, i.e., pulse, skin, tongue urine, etc.

• Be able to prepare foods that are nutritious and balancing for their dosha.

 

In this segment you will:

Devote time to standing postures, observing inward and outward spiraling energies of the legs and structural support of the foot, pelvis and spine while standing.

• Practice 2-3 hours of asana
• Discussion of the sutras – meaning of yoga, definition of practice and asana.
• Observe our own posture and how to be “functional.”
• Share questions as practitioners and teachers.
• Experience relaxation and pranayama in the afternoons.

Learn inversions and continue into arm balances while reviewing safety and fear, as well as the benefits of inverted postures.

• 2-3 hours of asana headstand, shoulder stand, elbow balance, handstand.
• Sutras relating to self study, surrender and the obstacles.
• Share strategies and modifications for an all level class.
• Take some restorative yoga for the late afternoon.

Learn asanas to prepare for backbends.
• Observe and create intelligent sequencing for backbends or other challenging poses.
• Sutras study on devotion and AUM.
• Afternoon sessions in pranayama.
• Share personal stories and challenges to deepen our practice.
